Christa Pike is currently in critical condition and fighting for her life following her severely botched execution attempt, leaving her entirely unconscious and dependent on a mechanical ventilator to breathe. This tragic turn of events occurred after Pike made history by becoming the very first woman to face capital punishment in the state of Tennessee since the nineteenth century. In the wake of this deeply concerning and controversial incident, her scheduled execution has been indefinitely placed on hold after Tennessee Governor Bill Lee made the executive decision to call off all remaining state executions for the remainder of the calendar year.

Pike’s defense attorney urgently called upon the state governor to officially commute her impending sentence, vehemently citing the deeply botched execution procedure as an undeniably cruel and extraordinarily torturous ordeal. In the meantime, the dedicated hospital medical staff is working exceptionally hard around the clock to save her fragile life and successfully remove all traces of the lethal pentobarbital from her system.

One might ask why they are working so hard to save a condemned person. What got her to this point?

Christa Pike was ultimately sentenced to capital punishment after making a full and chilling confession that she had brutally murdered her fellow high school classmate, Colleen Slemmer, in the grim year of 1995. Pike perceived Slemmer as a significant romantic rival for the affections of a mutual acquaintance, and she meticulously lured the unsuspecting victim to a dark, secluded area on the University of Tennessee campus under the false pretense of making peace, only to brutally kill her.

Above Colleen Slemmer

Once they arrived at the desolate location, Christa and her male companion systematically slashed Slemmer repeatedly with a sharp box cutter while subjecting her to prolonged physical torture. Escalating their horrific brutality, Christa then repeatedly bludgeoned Slemmer’s head with a heavy, jagged piece of asphalt. In a final, gruesome act while the victim was still clinging to life, they carved a pentagram directly into Slemmer’s chest.

On her way out from the gruesome crime scene, Christa admittedly picked up a macabre piece of Slemmer’s skull and slipped it securely into her pocket to serve as some sort of grotesque trophy. She would later proudly show that fragmented piece of human bone to several unsuspecting classmates while openly bragging about the details of her brutal killing. Colleen Slemmer was only 19 years old with her entire life ahead of her when Christa Pike mercilessly tortured and killed her during a dark Satanic ritual.

It was likely Christa’s completely unremorseful and defiant attitude during the trial that heavily contributed to her receiving the ultimate death sentence in the very first place. So why on earth, if the judicial system desperately wanted to kill her for her undeniably sadistic and violent crime, are officials and lawyers trying so exceptionally hard to save her life now? And if they somehow manage to save her from lethal injection, should she remain indefinitely locked away on death row to nervously await yet another scheduled execution?

Her legal representatives and vocal supporters firmly believe that she should receive a commutation of her death sentence, heavily citing the severe and alleged sexual abuse that she endured throughout her childhood, alongside the terrifying ordeal of a previously botched execution attempt. However, this perspective sparks intense debate, as critics argue that if every ruthless killer were to be excused based on various extenuating circumstances and past traumas, a vast majority of heinous murderers would ultimately qualify to evade their ultimate punishment.
